Is it possible to be the macrocosm in the middle of the microcosm? It’d be like looking for the storm in the eye, instead of the eye in the storm. If this is possible, our best example is Aquarius. All humans have a strong drive to belong that starts in childhood, including Aquarians. Because of this need a natural conformity occurs with families, groups, religions or cultures. Numerous studies have shown that emotional connection to other people is crucial to our survival and success as humans.
Inside of this conformity, individuality becomes difficult to assert because we rely on our communities and groups for that sense of belonging. Being a part of the group is better than being outcast, which can lead to emotional or even physical death in some cases. Fortunately, asserting our individuality gets easier as we get older. Despite this, for some it’s very easy and for others it’s difficult. Some people take it to the extreme and challenge everything risking isolation from a group and not being a part of the “whole” of their given reality and community. Welcome to the paradox of Aquarius – the humanitarian driven by human connection! As much as they desire to be a part of others, a higher drive propels them to global humanitarism. You must understand - it’s not that they want to challenge the norm - they have to.
In our example of a garden which is sowed by Aires; grown by Taurus, identified with itself in Gemini, nurtured by Cancer love, strengthened by the Leo sun, tended to by Virgo, balanced by Libra, regenerated by Scorpio, tilled by Sagittarius and reworked for a new season by Capricorn; Aquarius is the rebel. They do none of the above and instead opt to do what they want to do. They might appear as an unexpected growth after you thought all the seeds were gone. They might mutate with another species and shock you. They might decide not to grow at all or grow on the other side of the fence. They might wander further than you like and be uncontrollable. Aquarius teaches us that being our own autonomous, self-functioning individual means we don’t render ourselves powerless to an individual, group or culture. True to their sign the Aquarian lover has a unique way of capturing their partner. They are not like Scorpio who lures their prey with raw sexuality and piercing claws into your soul. The irony is that even if you balance this, provide space and freedom there is still the risk your Aquarian will lose interest.
